Swansea School Councils Network

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

On_Monday 12th of July, a ‘School Councils Day’ was held at Ysgol Gyfun Bryn Tawe. The day was arranged for the English medium schools in the City and County of Swansea to meet our School Council and the Welshness Committee, to discuss ways in which our school can help their schools improve their bilingualism/Welshness. Ysgol Gyfun Pontarddulais, Cefn Hengoed and Daniel James Schools came to visit the school.

During the day, there was lots of discussion about how we could make Welsh a fun subject in English medium schools. There were ideas such as a rock workshop, similar to the type of workshops that have been held during the year under the name “Sound School”, filming workshops and going in to the school to hold a Twmpath with the younger years in the school. Creating a Welsh mural and allowing year eleven to sign it was also a popular idea.

Following discussions of the ideas, the schools went on a tour around the school to view our bespoke facilities and how lessons were taught through the medium of Welsh. This tour had a massive impact on a lot of pupils, with some feeling guilty for not trying in their Welsh lessons.

Everyone came back together after the tour to discuss how to transfer their enthusiasm to their schools’ pupils and to agree on a new implementation plan. There were many positive ideas and the pupils went back to their schools with the intention of making Welsh a more practical and fun subject. As well as this, the three councils will work with our Welshness Committee to organise ‘Welsh’ days where our Welshness Committee will visit English medium schools and hold Welsh medium workshops/activities.

Written by Lewis Gardiner, Head Boy and Chair of the School Council.

Goodbye Mr Williams, Welcome Mr Daniels

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Many of you will be aware that I am retiring from my role as Headteacher of Bryn Tawe at the end of this term. I should like to thank everyone who has worked with me over the years, since the school’s inception in 2003, to ensure that Bryn Tawe has become one of the best schools in Wales.

On a personal note, my period as head has been an exciting one and one that I will never forget. The opportunity to establish a new school comes infrequently, and over the last seven years the school has gone from strength to strength. A significant part of this success can be attributed to the excellent spirit of cooperation that has developed over the years, as staff, parents, governors and more importantly, you the pupils. I am entirely confident that the school will continue to succeed widely under the leadership of Bryn Tawe’s new Headteacher, Mr Graham Daniels. I wish you every success.

To conclude, can I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to my generous leaving gift, and in particular to the members of the PTA for coordinating the collection. With the money, I will purchase a piece of art work, which will have pride of place at our home in Llandeilo.

Jennie Eirian Remembrance Trophy

On Friday afternoon of the Eisteddfod in Llanerchaeron, one of Year 12’s pupils received a special prize. Anys Wood came first in the prose for Under 25’s competition. Anys wrote a number of contrasting monologues.

This year the prose prize competition was held in conjunction with the Jennie Eirian Remembrance Trophy, and was presented to Anys, by the Bard Tudur Dylan Jones, in a ceremony, in the main pavilion on Friday afternoon.

A Message of Peace and Goodwill 2010

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

A Message of Peace and Goodwill from the young people of Wales to young people all around the world 2010.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Time is running out and we have reached a crossroads. Climate change is a real problem and we must act now.

If things continue as they are, the Arctic will no longer exist in its current form in three years time. Fact.

If the planet’s temperature rises by 4⁰C, the Sahara desert could stretch as far north as France. Fact.

On average every person in Wales creates 11 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Fact.

On average every person in Kenya creates 0.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Fact.

You can’t say that you didn’t know we’re using too much fuel. That we’re stripping the Earth of its minerals. That we’re being wasteful and throwing far too many things away. That we’re killing the planet.

Our message was the same last year and the year before, but time waits for no one.

We invite young people around the world to join us, the young people of Wales, in facing reality and making our voices heard. Let’s make climate change an issue for action now. We call on you to choose the right path at the crossroads. There’s no point looking back at what has happened. Today is a new opportunity and tomorrow is full of promise.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Can you hear the clock ticking?

Meeting Eurig

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

On Tuesday 18th of May, 20 pupils from Bryn Tawe used the Video Conferencing room to meet with a well know Bard, Eurig Salisbury. Three schools took part in this memorable session, Bro Myrddin, Bro Morgannwg and Bryn Tawe. Every school had the opportunity to ask Eurig some questions, for example ‘Where do you get your inspiration?’,‘What are your hopes for the future?’ and ‘How many prizes have you won?’

Eurig answered the questions and read some of his poetry – which mentioned his fashionable hair (!) and the experience of being in the tunnel before a rugby game. Eurig spoke of the achievement of winning Chairs in the Eisteddfod and the difference between them all, with the Swansea Inter-College Eisteddfod Chair being one of the most memorable as half a tree was turned into a chair. In the future, Eurig would like to win the Chair in the National Eisteddfod.

He gave advice to us as future Bards, and told us ‘Don’t listen to the professionals, and go for it!’ He talked about the ‘Stomp’ competition, which is more of a light hearted competition to try.

Meeting with Eurig was a great opportunity and he gave us all very useful advice. We thanked Eurig for his time with us. It was a fantastic experience and we all enjoyed!

By Gwen King and Lauren Coles.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

On_Monday 22 March some of the more prominent rooms of the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth were transformed into a Second World War set, in celebration of the launch of the ‘From Warfare to Welfare’ (MYGLYW) project.

Pupils from the School and from Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, Bethesda took part in various activities connected to themes associated with the Second World War.  The children were dressed in period costume as they went back in time to the period  between 1939 and 1959, with the aid of a digital story presentation and a monologue. They also had an unique opportunity to quiz  Donald Parker of Penparcau about his experiences of being a Second World War evacuee.

In addition, The Glamorgan Home Guard Living History Group recreated scenes of life during the War in the Library’s corridors. To celebrate the end of the War, the pupils attended a tea party to the accompaniament of music from the period.

To conclude the day, all of the pupils were presented with a DVD and a book produced by the project to remind them of their experience. The digital stories appear here on the project’s website.

The School’s success in Wales’ small local eisteddfod continues! On the 5th of February, two of our Year 12 pupils were highly successful in the local Eisteddfod in Ffairfach, Llandeilo.

Eleri Williams had great success in more than one competition. She came 1st in the Hymn Singing for the under 30 age group , the Solo Singing for the under 18 age group, the Folk Singing for the under 18 age group, and 3rd in the Solo Challenge. Eleri also received the cup for the most promising young person. Anys Wood was successful by coming 1st and 3rd in the Literature Competition for the under 25 age group. The judge praised her sensitive and acute writing, as well as its maturity.

Both received high praise, and it was great to hear the school’s name being prominent on the Eisteddfod stage once again! Congratulations to both girls, and keep competing!

Payments for Skiing Trip 2011

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Thank you very much for the payments we have received so far. We shall be collecting payments on the 1st Friday of every month. Every monthly payment should be £65. If you have not paid the second payment, is it possible to send the payment in with your child within the first week back after half term?

Straight after half term your child will receive a payment card (if they have not received one already).  They will need to bring the card with them every time they make a payment to ensure a record is kept of the payments.

Many thanks, Mr S Davies.

BAC LANGUAGES WEEK – ‘U Learn Chinese’

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Following the Languages Week which took place in June, Mr and Mrs Niedergang from the Confucius Institute (Lampeter University) were invited back to the school on the 1st of February, in order to present a gift to the sixth form pupils.

We as a school are very proud that Bryn Tawe was the first comprehensive school in Wales to work in partnership with Confucius on the Welsh Bac. The course ‘U Learn Chinese’ was used during the week – a project in which many countries are investing. We very much hope that our relationship with Confucius will develop as we continue annually with the Baccalaureat language module.

‘Youth Speaks’ Rotary Competition, Swansea Round 2010

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

It is with pleasure we note the school’s success in the local rotary competition once again this year. Four teams represented the school and provided the audience with heated debate in the school library, on Wednesday, 3rd February. In the junior competition, last year’s winners reclaimed their title with a discussion on texting. Emyr Meek (chairperson), Luke Morgan (proposer) and Iago Bratley-Harris (opposer) all contributed intelligently to the contentious topic on whether or not “Texting is the future of the English language”.

Whilst in the senior competition, three teams fiercely battled for a place in the South West Wales competition next week at Kidwelly. Congratulations to our sixth form team, consisting of Catrin Hill (chairperson), Lewis Gardiner (proposer) and Emma Llewellyn (opposer) for their intense discussion on the “Battle of the Sexes”. The audience also enjoyed an interesting political debate on the UK’s greatest ally; Evan John put forth the case for Europe, whilst Jonathan Roberts argued the merits of the USA. Vicky Solomon scooped the best chair prize for keeping them under control! We also witnessed a contemporary clash of opinions on the freedom of the press, well done to Nathan Levy and Nia Webb for winning the best proposer and best opposer awards respectively, the debate was chaired calmly and expertly by Toni Mihailidis. We now look forward to representing the region at the South West Wales round next Wednesday, January 10th. Special thanks to the adjudicating panel of Mrs Hannah Ambler, Mrs Sarah East and Miss Meinir Jones, and to Scott Jones (year 11) for filming. The teams were trained by Mr Chris Shaw.

Ann Smart Under 16 Netball Championship – Swansea, Neath and Afan

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The school’s under 16 netball team played extremely well last Friday in the County tournament. Here are the results for the earlier rounds – a win against Bishopston (12-3) and Bishop Vaughan (26-2), and an equal game between us and Olchfa (8-8).

The Semi Final between Bishopston was exciting and close, with a score of 5-5 at the final whistle! The game went into extra time, and then on to a golden goal, with the girls netting the winning goal!

They went on to face Gwyr in the final.  Final score, 9-4!

Congratulations to Katie Llewellyn, Bethan Phillips, Sarah Llewellyn, Lowri Davies, Finny Rees-Godwin, Buddug Llŷr, Elin Walters, Mari Harris, Anwen Harris a Elin Samuel.

We wish them all the luck on February 5th, where they are representing the County in the National Competition in Carmarthen (a 1st in the history of Bryn Tawe). Good Luck girls!

Many thanks to Angharad Morris and Miss Lindzi Miller who went with the girls.

Welsh Bac News

Monday, January 25th, 2010

A very promising response was seen during the Yr 9 Options evening as twenty five Year 9 pupils and their parents came to hear presentations on the Welsh Baccalaurate Qualification in Key Stage 4. We are very pleased to have had our bid accepted by the Welsh Assembly Government to offer the Bac for the first time in September 2010 at Key Stage 4. This course will build upon the success we have seen with the Welsh Bac in the 6th Form and will offer progression as Yr 11 students move on to their 16-19 curriculum.

Yr 12 are in the process of finalising their Working With Others portfolio following the Bac Winter Fair and have started developing the Key Skill of Improving Own Learning and Performance. We expect a visit from the OCR External Examiner next month in order to claim these skills officially. This weeek Yr 12 are visiting the Senedd in Cardiff as part of their Wales Europe and the World Bac core. Check back for the details on this website!

Yr 13 students are reminded that this Friday – January 29th is the final deadline for submission of your complete Welsh Bac diary and the final draft of the Individual Investigation. It’s most pleasing to note so many of you receiving university offers which recognise a full 120 UCAS points for the Bac – the sweat and tears have been worth it !
