Year 11 pupils recently took part in the United Nations Model meeting (organised by CEWC) at Swansea’s Civic Centre, on Wednesday, 18th November. The pupils enjoyed the experience immensely, and it was a pleasure to note their enthusiasm in discussing international matters in a mature and intelligent way.
The day was a valuable experience as the pupils developed their understanding of citizenship, as they discussed the effects of climate change on the planet. The meeting’s purpose was to raise awareness of global warming prior to the meeting of world leaders in the Copenhagen summit in December. Our pupils busily discussed the long-term effects of climate change on Brazil, China, Norway and the tiny island of Tuvalu. It is vital we praise the confident efforts of Nia Griffiths (brazil), Nathan Levy (Norway), Toni Mihailids (China) and Llyr Thomas (Tuvalu) for delivering speeches on their countries’ behalf. It was lovely to hear the praise of the translator for the school’s strong Welsh ethos in a largely English-medium event.

It is also important to note the lively contributions of Nia Webb and Aled Meredith in representing Brazil, Evan John and Adam Lloyd (Norway). In all honesty, Evan caused a stir with his stinging criticism of the Russian delegation for their selfish consumption of oil. Congratulations also to Jonathan Roberts and Vicky Solomon for voicing China’s opinions, and Amy Green and Ben Roberts for supporting Tuvalu. The event was organized by Mr Chris Shaw.
