The Chairing Ceremony 2018

Our Chairing Ceremony was held on 1 March as part of the school’s St. David’s Day celebrations. As usual the school’s prefects, Jasmine Lewis and Iwan Tomos, were responsible for the event.

This year, the Chief Bard Rhys Jones, who won the chair at the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey in 2017, was the adjudicator. We received his decision in the form of a video that was shown during the ceremony and we thank him for his thorough work in adjudicating.

It became clear that ‘Y Real Slim Shady’ had pleased the adjudicator greatly. It was also great to see Rhydian Cleaver from Year 13 getting up from his seat at the back of the full hall to receive the privilege of being the school’s Head Litterateur this year. Congratulations to him. In second place for the chair was Nel Richards from Year 12, with Nel once again in joint 3rd place with Sion Thomas from Year 8! The Welsh Department would like to thank everyone who competed and especially the staff and pupils who took part in the ceremony – especially Rhys Whatty for accompanying on the harp, Annwen Breakspear for singing the chairing song, Mrs Shanklin for the fanfare and Bethan Hawkins and George Griffiths for bringing the winner to the stage. It was also lovely to see representatives from each year on the stage after being chosen because of their commitment to Welshness at the school.

Congratulations also to Ffion Thomas for winning the English Trophy.
