Shakespeare Success

Once again this year, the English department has taken part in the Shakespeare School’s Festival. 18 pupils from year 10 and one from year 9 performed a 30 minute version of The Tempest at the Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea, on the evening of the 16th of November.

After an audition process before the summer, pupils spent weeks rehearsing Shakespeare’s work after school, led by Miss Comley, who directed the project. Pupils were keen to create a modern performance, with updated details to the story, such as the queen and company travelling by airplane rather than by ship during the play’s opening.

Amongst the talented cast were pupils who have previous experience with performing Shakespeare’s work at a national level, thanks to the English Speaking Union’s Performing Shakespeare competition. Ffion Tomos took on the role of Ariel and Anwen Morgan appeared as the evil Antonio. This year’s Best Duologue winners at the ESU’s competition, Ashton Williams and Sion Thomas, took to the stage once more, this time playing Ferdinand and Caliban respectively.

The department would like to thank all pupils for their dedication to the project again this year. They have all worked immensely hard and it has been a pleasure to work with the talented and enthusiastic pupils of Bryn Tawe again. Heartfelt thanks to Miss Comley for coordinating the project and directing the pupils.
