Speaking Success

Huge congratulations to our junior and senior public speaking teams for their success at the recent regional Rotary ‘Youth Speaks’ competition, which was held in Llanelli Town Hall on Tuesday, 15th January. The two teams claimed first prize in their respective competition and proudly represented the school. The junior team, consisting of Steffan, Jonah and Sonny (all in year 8) presented an interesting debate on the life lessons provided in JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ books. Indeed the audience were spell-bound by Sonny’s insightful speech, and Steffan and Jonah scooped individual prizes for best chairperson and best proposer of the vote of thanks. The senior team were not to be outdone, and there were excellent performances from Caitlyn, Manon and Nansi. Manon presented an emotive argument on the intriguing question of ‘is there more to Paddington Bear than his love of marmalade?’. Once again, it was brilliant to see the team’s success was matched by individual prizes for Manon (as best speaker) and Nansi, who matched her younger brother’s achievements in being named best proposer of the vote of thanks. The two teams will now proceed to the next round of the competition, to be held in Abergavenny in March. The school wishes the teams, and their coach, Mr Chris Shaw, every success.
