A Level Transition Tour

Pupils studying A level Welsh went on an overnight trip to Aberystwyth with a group of Yr.11 who are considering studying Welsh next year. We left the school at tea time and settled in University accommodation on the Aberystwyth campus. We headed to the Burger restaurant on the Promenade for a banquet and a night of light competitions – aimed at literary tasks and other fun challenges. After breakfast at the Bunkhouse in Aberystwyth, there was a session on ‘Cynghaneddi’ in the company of Eurig Salisbury, followed by a session by Bleddyn Owen Huws about Dafydd ap Gwilym. Afterwards, we were welcomed with a talk from Lefi Gruffudd, Sulwen Richards and Miriam Glyn about experience in terms of employability – about how they have benefited A level Welsh and / or a degree in Welsh. Lefi Gruffudd was the first visitor to Y Lolfa Press, then Sulwen Richards who works for the University’s Marketing Department, and Miriam Glyn who is the translator for the Welsh Government. Before lunch, three former pupils called in to talk about their experience of studying Welsh. After a delicious lunch at the Arts Center, we visited the “Drwm” at the National Library to enjoy a session with Peredur Lynch about the Hengerdd followed by a talk with Caryl Lewis at the end of the day. On the way back to school at tea time on Saturday, a stopped at the Tryweryn memorial for a picture of the whole crew. A successful A Level Transition course which will hopefully inspire year 11 students to study the course next year.
